Oil Spill Response Market: Call For Submissions

Scuba man by Matte Stephens
The effects of the BP oil spill have been devastating, and with the continued crisis and looming hurricane season, we have decided to replace our upcoming online "On the Road" summer market at Poppytalk Handmade that will run Jul 5 - Jul 30/10 with an "Oil Spill Response Market". We are now accepting submissions for this market where we will be asking our participants to donate at least one item from their virtual table to the clean up efforts. We as hosts will be donating a percentage from each table rental (depending on participation). We will be donating the money to Oxfam America who has set up a special donatation page online where one can donate. Click here for more info on their program. It would also be nice if each item that is donated for the cause would have an ocean/nature theme to bring awareness to the cause. Please email us at poppytalkblog[at]yahoo[dot]ca with the words "Oil Spill Response Market" in the subject line before our deadline of June 20th, 2010.

Here are a few testimonials we have received from current Poppytalk Handmade participants:

December 2010

As a new business it can be hard to gain notice in the sea of competition out there so I really appreciate how Poppytalk Handmade creates a curated environment for makers shine in. During my time at the market I noticed a definite jump in visitors to my site and even more exciting to me was that my work was noticed by other blogs and even a print publication. Jan was also completely accessible and helpful and did a great job of promoting the makers in the market on Poppytalk and in features on other sites like Etsy when she was asked to do guest posts. Jan and Earl have put together a wonderful venue in Poppytalk Handmade and I hope to be back soon with new goodies. Thanks!

Poppytalk has been great. I absolutely love it and have nothing but praise for what they do. I've really enjoyed my time in their marketplace. They are super respectful and excited about handmade, independent work and its producers, and creativity in general. They are pretty creative about the ways that they promote it, too. They also have the distinction of being the very first to do something like this.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for including me in your "handmade market" this month. I have been a reader of Poppytalk for a while, it was one of the very first blogs I discovered before I really understood what a blog was. Your site was always one that I kept in the back of my mind as a good fit for my work, and I finally had the courage to put myself out there and send my work off to you. It worked out, and it's an honor to be included among the other amazing talented artists that you feature.
The market was so easy to load my work onto and it just looks fantastic! You couldn't have made it anymore user friendly! It's also nice to be able to contact you- you reply and answer the questions promptly and keep us informed. The latest email you sent was really helpful and informative and very much appreciated. Thank you!
Thanks too for using my work on your sfgirl post! It was such a thrill to come across it today- a great surprise!
I am finding such a lovely and supportive community of bloggers and artists out there in the world, and I just wanted to take the time to thank you so very much for all you do. I feel so lucky to have made a connection with you- thanks.

all the best,
sarah ahearn

Good Morning,

I have been so busy this week recovering from NSS-- but, I wanted to thank you for creating the Paper Pops market.

I have to tell you, so many people came to my booth saying they had seen me on Paper Pops at PoppyTalk...and that is how they knew to come to my booth. I know that participating in the market really helped introduce me to buyers who were definitely looking for something new and independent.

The show was big-- and it seemed to me that telling people in your audience I was going to be there *before* actually getting there, helped me get traffic I otherwise would not have seen- there was simply so much area to cover that it's easy for sellers to get lost.

So-- I really wanted to thank you for all your work, and the thought behind all you are's obvious you put a great deal of thought into it....and to let you know it's working...really well.

Hi Jan and Earl,
I really had a great experience in the 'Here Comes the Sun' market. Thanks for having it! The exposure was great and I had plenty of sales, too.

Thanks so much!
Tina Rice

Hi Jan & Earl,

Participating in your Love Transforms market was an exciting, nail biting experience. I received a number of orders which included one from Sweden and the global exposure also led to a wholesale order from Australia!

I look forward to another exciting month on Popppytalk Handmade!

Just wanted to let you guys know this week has been crazy with sales. So much Christmas business from you guys. Thank you! Love looking at the handmade shop too. You have such a great eye. Everything is well put together and goes together in such a beautiful way. Just wanted you to know.

All the best

Hi Jan,

I just wanted to write you this quick message to thank you for the opportunity of being on PHM. I was a slacker as far as updating my products (I've been so busy!) but I've gotten some great results by being there and from your blog in general.

What also prompted me to write is that I finally got around to checking out the info that I get from my clients. In the purchasing process I ask "how did you find me" and I would have to say that at least 70-80% of my customers answered through Poppytalk. :) So I just wanted to give you (and Earl!) a big thank you and kudos for all your hard work and for your
mentions of my work on your blog (the calendar was a hit!).

So anyway... That's it. Thank you! :)

Thanks so much for the blog love on the hoodies! And
thanks for all your promotions and efforts in regards to the shop.
I hope it's turning out to be what you've hoped for!
I know that business has been busier than ever for
me over the last

Hey Jan!

I am SO excited to be doing so well! I have been selling a ton (well, for me anyway) and this morning had 9 more orders. Incredible! I would have to say that the market has helped me over a big hurdle. Being seen and promoted by a site with quality products, great designers and chic products has been invaluable for my new business. Thank you!!

I also had a wholesale order that pretty much wiped me out but I do have some new links and new designs to upload today. I'll be sending those to you soon.

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of Poppytalk Handmade! :)

Hi Jan,
I just wanted to tell you that I've been getting so many orders that are from Poppytalk Handmade. We are getting orders everyday since the launch and big ones too - the mobile and the lamp. Most of the orders are from US addresses. I just wanted to tell you how great it's working out and I hope it keeps up!! Thanks again for all you've done.
talk to you soon.
arounna :)

Hello and congratulations!!
The site looks fantastic and I feel so proud to be included along side so many amazing artists. Thank you! I hope you have some time to sit back and enjoy it all now! Thank you again, if only we could all get together to meet and toast you in person. Cheers to you and yours and lots of best wishes too,
Charm Foundry

Thank you for the amazing ride I am having with
Poppytalk Handmade.

Hi Jan,
I just wanted to tell you that I think I am seeing some good results from having a table with you! I've had a definite upswing of sales this week and many of them are from buyers brand new to Etsy, and from all over the world. Cool. The site looks great and is a lot of fun to browse - I'm really impressed and grateful to have been included.

Thanks for this great opportunity, you've created a great portal of happiness.

How It Works!

Before submitting or emailing us, please read. Most questions are answered here. Thank you.

Poppytalk Handmade is a curated online marketplace to showcase, buy and sell handmade goods of emerging design talent from around the world. Our market provides emerging designers and artists an opportunity to connect with consumers, retail buyers, stylists, personal shoppers and the press. It was launched after we noticed how difficult it was to find good designed work within the sea of online shops. We are a design-oriented team dedicated to showcasing and promoting emerging design talent. Our blog, Poppytalk is our voice. Click here to read more about us.

We are proud to be "the original curated marketplace" (having come up with the concept first) and are proud to be number one (email us for details) for bringing the best results to it's participants! Now in our second year, we are dedicated to supporting emerging artists by giving them a "fair" and best option to have their work seen online.

We rent out "virtual tables" (much like an art/craft market) to artists/designers for a one month period (or more) where all items on these "virtual tables" are linked to each artists online shop (e.g. etsy, dawanda, big cartel, etc.). Each artist then sells directly to the buyers our site sends to their virtual table at our market and subsequently their own online site.

One can think of our marketplace like a launching pad to brand new products or a new shop. Perhaps you are a new designer/artist/shop and you wish to introduce your new product/company/shop to our audience. Or maybe you are an established artist and you wish to introduce a new series of your work through us.

All participants work appears on the frontpage of the Poppytalk Handmade homepage, and all images rotate randomly approximately every 15 minutes, so that each participants work gets a fair online showcase.

We curate the markets based on the quality (foremost) of the products, and how they work into the theme and the Poppytalk style.

We believe self reporting numbers to one's own site is much too unreliable and open to self-interpretation. We like to qualify our stats by a third party such as Technorati and Alexa. We want to be as accurate as we can be; it's only fair to our users and the entire handmade community. We know what it takes to build a real readership and have worked hard (since 2005) to build our readership up to where it is today. We recommend you ask for third party stats when shopping for a curated market such as ours, numbers you can view live online.

The traffic brought to Poppytalk Handmade is driven from our design blog, Poppytalk.

Click here to follow us on Technorati.

We are currently listed No. 103 on Alexa's Top Design Blogs.

We currently have over 5,000 followers on Twitter. Follow us here

Please email us at for our current visitors per month.

The majority of our blog readers are female, age 30 - 40, followed by the 25 - 30 age group. Besides buyers, many of our readers are magazine editors, tv producers and writers. Some of our participants have been contacted by major newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times and Martha Stewart. Read survey results: here.

Please read our press on Poppytalk Handmade here.

Testimonials from participants can be read here.

We have worked it out so you're spending no more than $2 CANADIAN per day (at the full price). If you choose the $45/month - 3 month deal it's .66 cents per day. We offer discounted rates as follows:

A) $40/month for six months
B) $45/month for 3 months
C) $60/month for the first month and then $50 if you wish to continue/return, but not commit to more than one month at a time.

We have taken careful consideration into how we would price Poppytalk Handmade, like advertising on a blog, we considered the amount of visitors we receive as well as what a real marketplace/craft fair would charge for a table.

Poppytalk is $60 for the first month (unless you opt for more than one month) - divided by 30 days = $2 per day

Most weekend craft fairs charge between $100 - $300 for one weekend.

Many blog ad rates run from $70 - $600 and up (depending on their stats).

Poppytalk Handmade advertises on several blogs per month to help bring in traffic along with the Poppytalk blog which posts several times during the market about particular product or special features. We also advertise on the Poppytalk blog itself on the left hand side sidebar (the best space available).

We also encourage each participant to advertise their table on their blogs/sites to also help bring in traffic.

Poppytalk also writes freelance for various magazines, sites and blogs from time to time.

Click here to see the upcoming market schedule.

Send a link of your online shop to poppytalkblog[at] and specifiy "Poppytalk Handmade Market Submission" in the subject line specifiying which market(s) you are applying for. Due to the administration involved, unfortunately, only those chosen for the market will be contacted. If you have not been chosen, please feel free to email us to discuss. Thank you.

If you don't yet have an online shop but are interested in participating you can send images to us and then you will need to set up an online shop after that in order to participate with us. An easy way to set up an online shop is through sites such as Etsy, Dawanda, Big Cartel, etc.

We are committed to the blog community and to the support of handmade goods.

Spring has sprung!

Spring is finally here! Yay and hooray! It's nice to see all the new and spring things popping up, and this is what we've just noticed over at The Handmade Artist. From top left clockwise: Michele Maule has some new prints (and another giveaway), click here for details, Susannah Conway has some Cupcakes of Happiness to offer in her shop; Spring has sprung at Green Island studios and Pixel Impress is having a one year anniversary sale!
