Oil Spill Response Market: Call For Submissions

The effects of the BP oil spill have been devastating, and with the continued crisis and looming hurricane season, we have decided to replace our upcoming online "On the Road" summer market at Poppytalk Handmade that will run Jul 5 - Jul 30/10 with an "Oil Spill Response Market". We are now accepting submissions for this market where we will be asking our participants to donate at least one item from their virtual table to the clean up efforts. We as hosts will be donating a percentage from each table rental (depending on participation). We will be donating the money to Oxfam America who has set up a special donatation page online where one can donate. Click here for more info on their program. It would also be nice if each item that is donated for the cause would have an ocean/nature theme to bring awareness to the cause. Poppytalk has been great. I absolutely love it and have nothing but praise for what they do. I have been so busy this week recovering from NSS-- but, I wanted to thank you for creating the Paper Pops market.

I have to tell you, so many people came to my booth saying they had seen me on Paper Pops at PoppyTalk...and that is how they knew to come to my booth. I know that participating in the market really helped introduce me to buyers who were definitely looking for something new and independent.

The show was big-- and it seemed to me that telling people in your audience I was going to be there *before* actually getting there, helped me get traffic I otherwise would not have seen- there was simply so much area to cover that it's easy for sellers to get lost.

So-- I really wanted to thank you for all your work, and the thought behind all you are doing...it's obvious you put a great deal of thought into it....and to let you know it's working...really well.

Poppytalk Handmade is a curated online marketplace to showcase, buy and sell handmade goods of emerging design talent from around the world. Our market provides emerging designers and artists an opportunity to connect with consumers, retail buyers, stylists, personal shoppers and the press. It was launched after we noticed how difficult it was to find good designed work within the sea of online shops. We are a design-oriented team dedicated to showcasing and promoting emerging design talent. Our blog, Poppytalk is our voice. Click here to read more about us.

We are proud to be "the original curated marketplace" (having come up with the concept first) and are proud to be number one (email us for details) for bringing the best results to it's participants! Now in our second year, we are dedicated to supporting emerging artists by giving them a "fair" and best option to have their work seen online.

HOW THE MARKET WORKS

We rent out "virtual tables" (much like an art/craft market) to artists/designers for a one month period (or more) where all items on these "virtual tables" are linked to each artists online shop (e.g. etsy, dawanda, big cartel, etc.). Each artist then sells directly to the buyers our site sends to their virtual table at our market and subsequently their own online site.

One can think of our marketplace like a launching pad to brand new products or a new shop. Perhaps you are a new designer/artist/shop and you wish to introduce your new product/company/shop to our audience. Or maybe you are an established artist and you wish to introduce a new series of your work through us.

All participants work appears on the frontpage of the Poppytalk Handmade homepage, and all images rotate randomly approximately every 15 minutes, so that each participants work gets a fair online showcase.

We curate the markets based on the quality (foremost) of the products, and how they work into the theme and the Poppytalk style.

OUR STATS

We believe self reporting numbers to one's own site is much too unreliable and open to self-interpretation. We like to qualify our stats by a third party such as Technorati and Alexa. We want to be as accurate as we can be; it's only fair to our users and the entire handmade community. We know what it takes to build a real readership and have worked hard (since 2005) to build our readership up to where it is today. We recommend you ask for third party stats when shopping for a curated market such as ours, numbers you can view live online.

The traffic brought to Poppytalk Handmade is driven from our design blog, Poppytalk.

PRICING:

QUOTED IN CANADIAN DOLLARS

We have worked it out so you're spending no more than $2 CANADIAN per day (at the full price). If you choose the $45/month - 3 month deal it's .66 cents per day. We offer discounted rates as follows:

A) $40/month for six months
B) $45/month for 3 months
C) $60/month for the first month and then $50 if you wish to continue/return, but not commit to more than one month at a time.

We have taken careful consideration into how we would price Poppytalk Handmade, like advertising on a blog, we considered the amount of visitors we receive as well as what a real marketplace/craft fair would charge for a table.

Poppytalk is $60 for the first month (unless you opt for more than one month) - divided by 30 days = $2 per day

Most weekend craft fairs charge between $100 - $300 for one weekend.

Many blog ad rates run from $70 - $600 and up (depending on their stats).

ADVERTISING:

Poppytalk Handmade advertises on several blogs per month to help bring in traffic along with the Poppytalk blog which posts several times during the market about particular product or special features. We also advertise on the Poppytalk blog itself on the left hand side sidebar (the best space available).

We also encourage each participant to advertise their table on their blogs/sites to also help bring in traffic.

Poppytalk also writes freelance for various magazines, sites and blogs from time to time.

Today's the last day for our Valentine's and Wedding Market over at Poppytalk Handmade, "Love Transforms". The market will be open until 9pm (Pacific) if you wish to get in your last purchases from this amazing group of artists/designers that participated this month. It truly was a beautiful market and a big thank you to all who visited us and our vendors. We are honoured to bring the artist and buyer together.

For those of you who are new to visiting here, and to give you a short background. We started the market back in 2007 due to the hours spent sifting through the sea of online shops looking for good, quality handmade items to post about here and be inspired by. Back in 2005 when we started this blog, it was clear these artists needed a voice to be seen and heard and we were madly hunting them down. Thanks to our Etsy Pick of the Day posts we started back then, the whole market idea evolved into what it is today. We noticed many of the picks we were picking were being "sold out" that very day and we then knew we were on to something.

We curate the best of the best of emerging design talent and are proud to bring them here. Each month we host a different themed market to coincide with the different holidays or times of year. With that said we're really looking forward to our next month's market (starting Monday), which is an Affordable Art Market. We hope you'll join us Feburary 16th for the launch! We are looking for beautiful valentines-themed papergoods, especially letterpressed and gocco printed, gifts with love in them, we are also looking for wedding items, gifts ideas, wedding accessories, favors, invitations, vintage, cake toppers, hearts, chocolates...love love love!

(A) Each participant has it's own page which has 12 placecards to hold twelve items on each page. One item from each page gets shown on the frontpage. We generally have around 75 participants - hence about 75 images on the frontpage, which rotate randomly each time you load the page.

(Q) Do you pick the items and what happens if one of more sell out are they replaced with other items?

(A) Generally if you have been chosen to participate, we don't need to choose your items, however we sometimes will suggest items in your portfolio that may work with the theme of the market or we may be interested in a particlar collection or series you have made specifically.

If your item sells out or you wish to replace an item, you can upload/exhange anytime during the market at no extra cost.

(Q)How would I send payment?

(A) We invoice (via paypal) after you have received your participant and login information just after the deadline submission date.

We rent out a virtual table to you for a monthly fee and then link your vitual table items back to your online shop (etsy for example). All monies are between you and the buyer - we just do the one time table rental fee. You can add/change items all month long as much as you wish. The info on the fees is here.

As we first began the market we priced it as if it were an ad space on our blog with extra perks (a table!) And now that many are returning, we'd like to offer a discount as follows:

We will be looking for beautiful screenprinted, gocco'd and letterpressed Valentine's cards and Wedding invitations & cards, gift items such as art, ceramics, jewelry, journals, housewares, and wedding accessory items including guest books, placecards, hand-bound albums, favors, white things and blue! Oh ya, and red things for valentines!

The market will run January 7th - February 8th, 2008!

The deadline for submissions is December 21st, 2007 and we hope to have everyone advised about a week later. After that we will start collecting links and start uploading.

Due to the high interest in a December Market, we're putting out a "Call For Submissions" at Poppytalk Handmade for a Holiday Madness & Sale Market which will include gifts, seasonal and sale items (e.g. boxing week)! Everyone will have the choice of selling things at regular price from December 10th until the 25th and then the sale portion of the market will begin on the 26th of December through to the 4th of January!

The market will run December 10/07 - January 04, 2008

The time has come to do a "Call For Submissions" for the November Poppytalk Handmade Market! The theme for November is Holiday + Gifts and we will be looking for gift type products and seasonal items! I hope we'll see some awesome holiday cards, wrapping paper, journals, candles, calendars, ornaments, decorations and tons of gift items such as art, jewelry, toys, and all things gift-giving-like (all handmade or vintage of course)!

The deadline this time is October 14th, 2007 and we hope to have everyone advised about a week later. After that we will start collecting links and start uploading.

The market will run November 5 - December 7, 2007 this time, to give us a week to load up all the images and go a little bit into December to catch those shoppers that still want to shop online and get their products via mail in time before Christmas.

it's finally here! today's the big day we launch poppytalkhandmade.com! there's been alot of excitement building up around the house towards this date and we're glad it's here. come join us for a celebration of our grand opening of our virtual street market at poppytalk handmade!

the selection of artists who are joining us this first month are really inspiring. we're so pleased so many great artists have chosen to join us for our launching month.

so here's the plan. poppytalk handmade is planning to go live on monday, october 01/07! the first online virtual street market curated by poppytalk will be a month long market selling handmade and vintage goods from 75 emerging designers/artists from around the world (literally!) from paris to israel, south africa, united states, canada, england and many more! so because of this i am a busy busy person as you read this, hence no posts unfortunately today. if you click on the image it will enlarge and you will see a sneak peek at some of the amazing artists included in october's market. i will be also posting a list of all the october artists participating in poppytalk handmade on the poppytalk handmade blog as soon as i can. so meet me back here monday for the launch!

Hello everyone! Phew! It's been a mind boggling week going through all the amazing decisions, but I think we've finished the selection process. So if you haven't been contacted, please give me a shout. I hope I haven't missed anyone.

Thank you all for your submissions for the first Poppytalk Handmade (Virtual) Street Market. It was overwhelming the reponse and the decision process was so so hard and difficult to make.

As much as we liked everyone's work, we had to draw certain lines with categories and numbers.

I encourage many of you who were declined this round submit for the Holiday Themed (gift) one being held in November. if you're at all interested please check this blog for announcements soon on the plan.

For those of you that have been selected, an animated banner should be up here over the weekend that you'll be able to save to your desktop to promote your table for the October Market. the poppytalk handmade deadline for the october market is fast approaching. i'm so so excited with the response from this, and so pleased to have almost 200 entries so far. but there is a couple more days to get your submissions in (deadline being september 15th) so if you're waivering at all, or behind on things, just shoot me an email and i'll be happy to take a look at your online shop as the submission per se. i will be in touch with everyone shortly after the deadline! it's going to be an amazing market! i can hardly wait!

poppytalk handmade - website (sneak peek)

we've been working hard over the weekend, me and my wonderful husband (well mostly my husband) who does all the tech stuff here and have come up with enough that we can show you what the main page of the poppytalk handmade site will look like as well as a vendor page (both which are still in development).

so how it looks right now is basically it except for a few cosmetic add ons that aren't there yet. each image on the main page represents a separate table and when you scroll down you will see more tables which gives each vendor a really high profile right away. a categories list on the left will be added and we changed the 9 images to 10 on the vendor pages (see below) - (just because it made more sense with the format we had going on the front page of five images across). when you click on an item on the vendor page, that item will enlarge for a better view. you will also be able to click on a "buy" button which will take you to the vendor's online shop (be it etsy, mintd, dawanda, or other). (for those that have been asking, you will be able to upload a new item once an item sells all for the same monthly rate). it's looks like it's going to be a really exciting first market with such an awesome array of high quality submissions coming in from some of my favorite designers and new ones too. stay tuned!

I'm so excited today to announce a new project I'm taking on here at Poppytalk, Poppytalk Handmade! It's been in the planning stages for a while now and I am now able to announce a Call for Submissions to our new online street market. Just like a real street/flea market, indie makers of all kinds will be able to rent a virtual table at Poppytalk Handmade for an opening date of early October/07 (just in time for the christmas season)!

Since the inception of Poppytalk’s “Etsy Pick of the Day” (www.etsypickoftheday.blogspot.com) last January and hosting my design blog, Poppytalk (www.poppytalk.blogspot.com) for the past two and a half years, I have come to realize the power of the internet and my responsibility to support the artists/designers in a fair and successful way.

I have also experienced and seen the frustrations of the seller and buyers to find/sell quality product amongst the sea of vendors. And having been quite successful with my picks both at Poppytalk and Poppytalk's Etsy Pick of the Day and to continue Poppytalk’s dedication to support emerging design talent, the idea of an online “virtual” street market came to mind to place focus and highlight handpicked quality designers!

The market will feature product that I personally love and would have in my own home. From the buyers point of view, it's like coming to my own personal little shop; each piece handpicked by me. I've received so much positive feedback from my readership, I thought that this was a good way to showcase artists and art that I love. My readership has grown to several thousand each day now and continues to grow, and my Etsy Picks of the Day consistently sell out. Artists will have a great opportunity to expose their work to my readership.

The site will feature a limited number of tables/pages (sellers), each will have one image on the home page. Imagine a site with virtual tables holding images of special designers, for a one month period. Each Poppytalk Handmade Street Market will be a month long allowing designers to showcase their wares in a more focused and quality platform and to increase awareness of their product more effectively. All items will be tagged and categorized for the buyers to be able to find preferred items (e.g. papergoods, art, etc.).

The first Poppytalk Handmade Street Market is planned for the beginning of October 2007 to fall in line with the holiday shopping season and if it becomes successful will become a monthly event.

Call For Submissions!

A call for submissions is going out for the first market effective immediately. Poppytalk Handmade Street Market will be going through all submissions received up to the deadline of September 15th, 2007. We will accept all handmade goods in the categories of art (from mixed media to photography), accessories (belts & bags), ceramics, crochet & knitting, furniture, holiday themed items, housewares, jewelry, papergoods, toys, and vintage (because we love vintage)! Forward submissions to poppytalkblog@yahoo.ca (including images and links of your product).

How it will work:

This opportunity to highlight quality handmade goods will be made possible by creating a website (www.poppytalkhandmade.com) which will host an image from each table/designer on the front page. A link from the image will go to the designer’s table (page) holding 9 items. Each page will introduce the designer and why they were picked or what we love about them and each item will have a description along with a link to their online store (be it Etsy, Mintd, Dawanda or personal online store/site). All monies exchanged will be between the buyer and the seller much like a real street market). And just like a regular street market, there will be a charge to rent a table (or in this case a page) which will cover administration and web hosting fees. Once an item sells, you will be able to upload a new item at any time.

October Price: $60 per table (plus applicable taxes)

Think of it like a one month advertising fee with enhanced features. Each table will hold 10 images of your product selected between Poppytalk Handmade and you which will hyperlink to your etsy, dawanda, mintd or selected online store.

If you wish to share a table with a friend you may do so, however to avoid administration, you will have to arrange payment through one person only. And the ten images will need to be split up between yourselves and Poppytalk Handmade.
